7 EVIDENT YET CHILLING SIMILARITIES BETWEEN PARIS ATTACKS AND 26/11

Everyone is horrified by the incidents that have happened in the capital city of France.  It is by the far the biggest terror attack the nation has ever seen. This is Europe 2nd largest terror attack second to only the infamous Madrid train bombings. Latest reports suggest that over 129 people have been killed. ISIS claims responsibility for the attacks and states that they carried them out as retaliation to the aerial bombardment campaign carried out by France in Syria.

To those who aren't aware there were 3 points of attack that happened in the city. One was the Bataclan Concert hall, second were outside the Stade de France and the third on the city’s famous restaurants and cafes.

Any of these feel similar?

On 26th of November 2008 10 militants of LeT launched 12 coordinated attacks on the city of Mumbai resulting in the death of 164 people.
The disturbing thing to see here was that there were quite a lot of similarities that happened between both the incident

They are as follows;

1. Both targeted large landmarks;
In the case of Paris it was a National Stadium and in case of Mumbai it was the Taj Hotel. Both represent or are symbols of the elite class.

TAJ HOTEL

STADE DE FRANCE

2. Both targeted places with large amount of concentrated populations that were sitting ducks;
In the case of Mumbai it was Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus vice-versa was  the Bataclan Concert hall.

Bataclan Movie Theatre

3.Both attacks have targeted cafes, restaurants.
Leopold cafĂ© in Mumbai and Le Carillon and Le Petit Cambodge in Paris (Although there were many more).

Leopold Cafe, Mumbai

4.Both attacks targeted Jewish establishments;
In the case of Paris it was Bataclan Theatre, which was owned by two Jewish brothers, Joel and Pascal Laloux as recently as September 2015(They gave it up because of the threats they had been receiving due to their open support for Israel). In case of Mumbai it Nariman house was targeted. The building was home to a Chabad house, a Jewish outreach centre run by Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, who owned the building since around 2006.

5.Both time the attackers were all prepared to die and not a hit and run sort of an attack (Fidayeen).

6.Although pretty trivial but both attacks were carried out during the night-time and the assailants were in their youngsters in their 20’s.

7.Both times the attackers’ preferred weapon of choice had been the infamous AK-47 along with ample use of hand grenades.

7 UNBELIEVABLE LESSONS EVERY MANAGER MUST LEARN FROM SMT.PRATIBHA PATILJI.

There are lots of women in India who can proudly say that they have gone beyond their duty to bring about concrete changes with our country . They have become ideal figures for us by being selfless and sacrificing. Women such as Sarojini Naidu, Vijaylaxmi Pandit, Rani Lakshmi Bai, PT Usha, Mary Kom, Kalpana Chawla, Bachendri Pal clearly have and the list goes on.

And then we have ladies such as our first women President of India, Mrs.Pratibha Patil who has been is well erm uhh influential as erm erm..  Going forward, on 25th of July 2007 India’s first lady president was sworn in, after Abdul Kalam.

Abdul Kalam -- a scientist, a patriot, a teacher and above all, a visionary. A man coming from humble beginnings and eventually, became known as one of the smartest people in India (Some might say world). A man with mass appeal who inspired millions. A man who literally built truckloads of missiles for India.

Yes, those are hard shoes to fill, conceded. So, when Pratibhaji was at the helm of Rashtrapati Bhavan we had great expectations. She eventually did meet them (hypothetically) if you care to continue reading on.

HERE ARE THE 7 OUTLANDISH LESSONS EVERY MANAGER MUST LEARN FROM PRATIBHA PATILJI WHILE SHE WAS SERVING AS THE PRESIDENT OF INDIA.

1. WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS -- USE THE TAXPAYERS MONEY AND STAY ABROAD FOREVER!

As a president it is the duty of a person to visit various nations and foster cultural and economic ties. Pratibha Patil did just that, well almost just that. She made 22 big ticket trips which cost the exchequer two billion rupees. She spent 79 days abroad alone.

2. FORGIVE PEOPLE FOR THE BAD THINGS THEY'VE DONE IN THEIR PAST.

When it comes to justice, Pratibhaji is considered to be magnanimous and she is also known to never discriminate within people, even if they are hardened-criminals. During her term as the president, especially by the end, she is said to have pardoned the death sentences of 'ONLY' 35 convicts. These convicts who were sentenced to death by the court of justice were of course 'petty' criminals (yeah right) who apart from being petty murdered entire families, raped women, and some even possessed an unnatural inclination towards small children . One of the death row she pardoned is Piara Singh and his 3 sons who killed 18 people during a marriage function. She is since been dubbed as the most merciful president we've had in 30 years.. So much over-pouring mercy.

PRATIBHAJI SUCCESSFULLY SCORING A 3-POINTER

3. NEVER PLACE YOUR WORK BEFORE YOUR FAMILY. INFACT PLACE YOUR FAMILY ON A GOVERNMENT CHARTERED FLIGHT AND TOUR THE WORLD!

If these weren't enough godly virtues, she is also a person who loves her family, dearly. She is said to have taken along her grandsons and relatives to her foreign trips at our expense, making everyone wish for a newer grandma. When she headed a cooperative bank, she allegedly waived off interest rates for her relative and friends, saving them from giving large amounts of interests to evil, mean Sahukars. The RBI eventually cancelled the banks license on such irregularities.

4. DON'T JUST LOVE YOURSELF. LOVE YOURSELF 3x

This being said she taught the people of the country one important lesson, loving oneself. Pratibhaji also hiked her own salary by 300%. I mean if you’re qualified and capable why settle for less? People appearing for job interviews please take note.

HEY GUYS! THIS IS WAYY EASIER THAN IT LOOKS

5. ALWAYS KEEP THE GIFTS YOU'VE RECEIVED. IT’S RUDE NOT TO TAKE CARRY THEM HALFWAY ACROSS THE NATION.

Also by mistake she took all the gifts she received from foreign delegates to her hometown of Amravati. It had 155 gifts and needed 40 trucks. She had to later return it and probably got a slap on her wrist.

PRATIBHAJI SMILING WITH HER NEWFOUND RESPECT FOR YAMRAJ

6. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX, RULES ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN!

Due to her initial retirement home being mired in controversy she eventually had to move to a different place where her home was expanded from 2,906ft to 6000ft, funnily enough according to the Presidents Pension Rules of 1962, a president’s retirement home should not exceed 2,000ft.

PRATIBHAJI DOING HER BEST TO SALUTE

7. DON’T BOTHER WITH THINGS YOU CANNOT CHANGE.

Pratibhaji is also said to be a reserved and quiet person, preferring to sit at home and chill when she has an important job to do, like take care of the country, encourage things like sports, health awareness, betterment of the poor and downtrodden, the farmers, reducing corruption, taking care of the armed forces, being the face of the nation, heck even attending events to light lamps and waving aimlessly at crowds.

Plus I hear she makes badass Puran polis.
Who wouldn’t want her back; I say we get her back. Anyone with me?

THERE IS ANOTHER REVOLUTION OF SORTS HAPPENING IN LIBYA

Tunisia.

Egypt.

Libya. Then Yemen, Bahrain, Syria, Algeria, Iraq and Jordan.

World watched with speculation, scepticism and hope, all the while people from the Arab nations poured out on the streets in protest. In the aftermath of the uprisings, four countries ousted their Heads of state. One is still fighting a civil war. And several others had constitutional changes.

But let’s focus on Libya. Libya is a North African country with rich oil reserves.  For almost 40 years it had been ruled with an iron fist of Gadhafi. But in 2011 everything changed. People fed up with dictatorship poured out on the streets and began protesting. As the protest swelled in numbers Libyan forces began gunning people down indiscriminately, this changed a peaceful demonstration to a violent riot that eventually led to a civil war in Libya.

Among all the factions in Libya fighting the oppressive regime, NTC (National Transitional Council) became the most prominent and started taking charge of the situation. After months of fighting and foreign intervention, the Gadhafi regime was toppled and a new government was installed.

Here is where things began to change.

When national elections were held the national governing body GNC (General National Congress) was formed and the Justice and Construction party came to power, which is part of the Muslim Brotherhood. It is alleged that they began funding several hard-line Islamist militants to start taking control over Libya. Several factions and tribes also began actively pledging allegiance to each other, thus a chain of reaction happened.  Eventually the whole of Libya came back into conflict, this time along more religious lines.

In this state of chaos, a certain General Khalifa Haftar stepped in.

The general urged all Libyans to fight the Islamist forces. Several units of the Libyan Army responded to his call and rallied behind him. The forces under Haftar began slowly retaking the cities back from the Islamist forces. But at the same time Ansar-al sharia began Operation Libyan Dawn which began getting back the cities it had lost.

In this game of back and forth, the Islamic State stepped in. Several members of Ansar Al-Sharia are said to have moved on to the IS and its only a matter of time before which it pledges itself to the organisation. This is a very alarming development because it shows IS’s capabilities to expand to area far away from its own.
Here is the very crucial juncture where the international community really need to act. It needs to rally behind the General or any other moderate faction and help stabilize the nation. Because the conditions that are developing in Libya are eerily similar to the one that was in Syria.

HOW THE KURDS HOLD THE KEY TO STABILITY IN LEVANT

This is the best time for Kurds since World War 1
                                                                                        -Adnan Mufti

Okay, the mandatory quote has been provided for. Let’s begin.

Everyone has been getting paranoid about the rise of ISIS lately, well it’s justified considering how rapid their expansion has been and how fanatically they’ve been trying to implement their interpretation of the Sharia Law. With countless massacres being reported on a daily basis and the well know ineffectiveness of the Iraqi Army being displayed marvelously, the world seems to watch nervously, how the fanatics of ISIS march on unopposed. IS has quickly seen and enjoyed influx of foreign fighters to the region, with people pouring in from not only Arab nations but also, North Africa and even Europe. Although IS maybe be spread out with only strength in various pockets, they’ve displayed the ability to carry out effective attacks and defeat other armies. Even with the massive airstrikes being carried by US and friends, IS’ expansion is largely unchecked, now controlling an area larger than that of U.K

But, in this cocktail of destruction, there is one group of people that may have something to rejoice about. The Kurds are an ethnic group that span 4 countries Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria who are generally considered to be the same as Arabs, although they vehemently beg to differ, owing to them having their own language and arguably different culture as well. The Kurds have been time and again been persecuted and oppressed in the nations they are minorities in, most notably in Turkey and Iraq. During the Saddam regime, they were infamously subjected to massive chemical attacks that cost the lives of thousands. The fight for a separate nation has led Kurds, led by Abdullah Ocalan’s PKK (People’s Workers party of Kurdistan) to follow a very similar path to that of terrorists (Resorting to bombings and such) in Turkey due to which they have been banned or designated as terrorist organization by EU and several other nations including the United States. But at the same time they are not banned by countries such as China, Russia and even India.

The main region from which we can say the Kurds operate is the Iraqi Kurdistan where the Kurds have managed to form an autonomous region in northern part of Iraq. The KRG or the Kurdish Regional Government Is the functioning body of that region, it is democratically elected by the people of the region. There are several parties such as PUK (People’s union of Kurdistan) and KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party). PUK is based in Iraq while the KDP originated from Iran. The current president Massoud Barzani is from the KDP.

Under the Iraqi Kurdistan we have the Kurdistan Armed Forces popularly referred to as the Peshmerga, which roughly translates to “The one who faces death”. The Peshmerga’s size is said to be varied ranging from as low as 80,000 to as much as 2, 00, 000.

They were the ones who had captured Saddam Hussein and also the ones who had captured Osama’s courier which eventually led to the US operation in Abbottabad. Most fighters in the force have received only basic training and are armed lightly in comparison to the IS militants.

Initially in 2014 when ISIS came into light for capturing major towns and large swathes of territory, the Kurds largely kept out of the conflict, preferring to only prepare defenses, but as the conflict worsened, the KRG saw the opportunity and began capturing key towns and positions from the ISIS. Backed by coalition airstrikes, the Peshmerga were able to rapidly advance onto several such locations. So far only the Peshmerga (setting aside some Shia Militant groups) have proven their battle capabilities against the ISIS. Only a couple of days ago the Peshmerga captured the town of Tal Afar and recently closed in on Ain Issa, a town as close as 50km from Al-Raqqa, the capital of the “Caliphate”. Another key reason to celebrate the capture of the town is the fact that it is the key town for the supply lines of IS.

Keeping their fighting capabilities aside, the Kurds are known for upholding the spirit of secularism. Several communities are said to coexist in the region including the Arabs, Armenians, Christians and Yezidis, with low number of cases being reported of discrimination. The Kurds also did a great favour to the Yezidis, a religious minority of the region (Interestingly, the religion bears a lot of things common with Hinduism), that were trapped in the Sinjar mountain when the IS militants captured the town eponymous to the mountain, killing all its men and taking the women as sex slaves. The rest who fled, fled to the nearby mountain of Sinjar and were trapped there without any food or water. After intense fighting the Kurds were able to drive away the militants and provided assistance to the people trapped in the mountain.

Also, apart from this the KRG region is said to be the most safest region in the whole of the Levant region, and has seen a great deal of development, in comparison to other neighbours
The capital city of KRG Erbil (referred sometimes are Irbil or Arbil) has had new townships coming up and large buildings being built .The region has also seen an increase in foreign investment in the region (Mainly due to oil).

The Kurds have also been the only people to ever talk about Women’s rights and implement it in this part of the globe. It will also be interesting to note that there are several women serving in the YPG and Peshmerga as fighters. The Kurds have also been active supporters of the United States and have also said they are willing to supply troops to the Iraqi government if a large scale operation takes place against IS.

Although all this seems very favorable, there are some voices of dissent being heard from the Arabs who feel that if the Kurds are too empowered they shall seek revenge upon the minorities. There have been some reports that the Kurds have pushed out Arabs from their homes and have resettled Kurd families there. If this dissent keeps growing in the local Sunni and Shia population, it could thwart all the good advances and in turn arm the IS to fight in a longer drawn battle. The biggest challenge apart from the fighting remains the contentment of the minorities, if the minorities are subjected to the same treatment that was vetted on the Kurds, the battle may already be lost. Although it is hard for the Kurds to forget the alienation caused to them, if the Kurds are to survive and thrive in the long run, they will have to take everyone along with them, including the Arabs, so that they do not eventually make the mistake of choosing the IS as the lesser evil.

WHAT JAPANESE RE-MILITARIZATION MEANS FOR INDIA

Well, the short answer is good, but we’re not here to discuss short answers. So, let’s begin.
Let’s discuss some history first. After the Japanese lost the 2nd World War, it allowed the Americans to re-write and modify its constitution into making them a pacifist nation. The article 9 of the Japanese Constitution states Japan

forever renounces war as an instrument for settling international disputes and declares that Japan will never again maintain “land, sea, or air forces or other war potential”, in order to protect Japan’s neighbours from possible future aggression from the Japanese.”

Although this may be true, the Japanese have kept a considerable sized armed force for practical reasons, namely for China and North Korea. Infact, The Japanese Self-Defence Force (JSDF or SDF) has participated in several UN Peacekeeping missions in Golan Heights and Nepal and also have had a non-combat presence in Iraq. But two incidents suddenly seemed to have changed things. One of them being the Senkaku islands and the second being the beheading of 2 Japanese journalists in Iraq by IS. Senkaku islands are uninhabited islands near Taiwan upon which China, Japan and Taiwan claim to be their own. The tension has escalated further after potential Oil and Natural gas resources have been found near the islands. The islands are also a large fish-rich region hence its economic significance is paramount. According to Japan, China has been repeatedly trying to capture the island by force using its navy and the sovereignty of Japan needs to be protected and hence, a regular armed force needs to be raised.
Civilian Protesters trying to enter the island forcefully.
Also from the wake of the beheading of 2 journalists in Iraq openly indicates how easily Japanese citizens can be targeted without any thought of retaliation because of their article 9. These two reasons has sparked a debate upon the particular articles’ interpretation and current government trying to get the article removed or atleast altered.
Although Rearming of Japan is probably a far-fetched idea, but if by a chance this may happen there will be several major consequences to be seen in the region.

Civilians from all three countries have tried to forcefully enter the island

WHAT IT MAY MEAN FOR INDIA

There is obvious evidence of India and China trying to compete each other on economic resources, specifically on South-China Sea and the Indian Ocean. The recent stand-off between India and China on India’s Oil and Gas investment in South-China Sea with Vietnam is the most recent incident proving this. The famous theory of the ‘The String of Pearls’ has also put India on the guard. To those who don’t know, the String of Pearls is an ‘informal’ theory of what China plans to do in the Indian Ocean. It has created a set of important bases in and around India and several places in Africa to supposedly tackle India’s expansion onto the Indian Ocean. The largest among these is probably the Gwadar port of Pakistan whose operations have been given off to a Chinese state-run company. China has also invested large amounts in the Chittagong port as well as in Hambantota in Sri Lanka and ports in Sudan and Kenya as well. This is an alarming development as it puts India’s naval capabilities well within China’s strike range (Although all bases are not militarized, so to say) and Japan’s increase in Naval budget spending will certainly steer away some of China’s advances upon the Indian Ocean. This will definitely put India at a bit of ease.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO THE JAPANESE

There are 2 sides to this, obviously it’s going to hit the economy and by hit I mean drain, in today’s current economic crisis increasing investment on the defence budget will dry the coffers. Japan also simply does not have the manpower China does and any armed conflict at this point will be disastrous at worst. But the upside here is also that China will begin to get wary of Japan’s capabilities along with its alliance with the U.S and help protect its economic interests in the region. This is simply paramount. This will not only help boost the economy it will establish Japan even more so as a world player who can still flex it’s muscles if it has to. This message will reach the IS as well.

Inspecting The Guard Of Honour.

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE

China has made several enemies amongst its neighbours and If Japan and India want to truly counter the Chinese they need to tap into this aspect. Countries such as Philippines, Mongolia, South Korea, Russia, Myanmar, Taiwan, Kazakhstan and Vietnam have been facing aggression by the Chinese and will willingly help India and Japan in this aspect, it depends on the hands of the respective governments on what they will decide to do, how they will decide it, and most importantly when. Because if China’s rise goes unchecked it will signal to the world on how violence and aggression can be effectively used to achieve one’s goals, which is not what countries like India would like to portray, because if this can be done, it will signal to the war-mongers towards our western borders that India can be easily undermined and subdued by aggression. There is an urgent need to check such advancements by creating strong alliances with such nations. It a watch and wait game I suppose.

FRENCH TOAST IN THE “SEMI-ARID DESERT”

While everyone is focussed on what is happening in Iraq, Syria or even Gaza everyone forgot about the fact that French has sent a 3000-strong force to Chad, for sub-Saharan Africa to battle Islamic militancy. They have been doing small-scale missions for quite some time now, but an operation on this scale has surprised everyone. The reason I’ve personally taken this issue up is because, well, it’s a welcome change from the news from what’s happening in Iraq and Gaza
.

PRELUDE:

Let’s revert ourselves to the year 2011. Libya was experiencing a civil war and unlike India African countries do not share the same sense of nationalism, they’re mainly divided into tribes. So when the Libyan war began several sects of the Tuareg Tribes began joining in the fight in Libya, some because they were on Gaddhafi payroll and others who fought against him because their tribe didn't like the way he rolled, this meant cross-border tribes too came into the conflict(Here I speak of the country Mali). After the war was over and everyone was off to business as usual, the cross-border dudes began to return (here we speak of Mali-Northern) due to variety of reasons majority being well, umm they didn't belong there? (Haha, sorry). But along with coming back they also had tons of weapons and ammunitions from the war they had just fought. So upon arriving back to Mali the dudes organised themselves into a militia called MNLA-National Movement For the liberation of Azawad. (Why not NMLA? Don’t ask) and began attacking the Malian government and its forces. They actually managed to capture large swaths of lands in the north. France really didn’t seem to care here because MNLA didn’t have anything against France and also didn’t possess any other worldly ambitions.

But in June 2012 couple of months after the whole fighting in Mali had begun and Azawad was free came a third party in the fight. The Islamists. Now MNLA came under attack from these guys and began taking a pounding, mainly from groups like Ansar Dine and Movement For Oneness Of Jihad In West Africa. These groups began capturing territories from the MNLA and began to implement the Sharia law upon the land. They were infact almost at the verge of capturing the capital of Mali when the French went Oh Merde!

FRENCH ANGLE:

Apart from being the colonial rulers of the region for a long time the French also have crucial economical investments in the region one of the majority being the uranium investment in Niger (Just South of Mali) by Areva of 1.9 Billion Euros, for the electricity projects in France (almost 3/4th of France’s energy comes from Nuclear Power Plants). MNLA wasn’t really a threat as they were happy with Azawad, but when the Islamic militant groups came barging in it wasn’t something France could tolerate. Hence to combat that threat France sent a 4000+ strong force, naming it Operation Serval( Serval is a really cool African cat you can’t really have as a pet). Intense fighting began between the French and Islamist militants. Also, seeing this MNLA also decided to join the fight alongside the Malian Government. Soon enough the Islamic militants took a pounding and fell back. The operation was a success and eventually the French Forces withdrew.

For support French allies U.K, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Dutch, Canada and United States chipped in logistical support. Along with this even African led forces were sent to Mali. Apart from all this Chad (The country) sent a fighting force Of almost 2000 troops to fight alongside the French.

OUTCOME:

The whole mission was a success and was praised far and wide by international bodies as well as countries to combat terrorism. The example set by the French was interesting because they managed not only to push back the Militants but were also able to restore peace, although the MNLA issue remains, but overall the mission was a success. As of now the French have decided to back this Operation Serval with Operation Barkhane( Meaning sandune in the desert, basically another thing you cannot have as a pet, well you could but there would certainly be questions raised upon your mental health), which basically consists of  3000-strong French force being sent to five countries Burkina Faso, Chad, Mauritania, Mali and Niger the countries that span the Sahel region(Except Sudan and Somalia, Senegal).

These countries shall prove to be crucial because these are the countries that are most endangered by terrorism. The most interesting part here remains to be seen is how the French plan to carry out this operation and also maintain peace in one of the most volatile, resource rich and ever forgotten regions in the world.
